Citation (AI)

A citation, in the AI-search sense, is an AI tool naming your store or linking to one of your pages as a source for the answer it just wrote. Perplexity shows citations as numbered footnotes; ChatGPT search shows them as inline links; Google's AI Overviews show them as source cards; some tools simply name the store in prose. Each is a citation, and each puts your store in front of a shopper who never saw a results page.

Citations are what the AI Recommends-You metric counts, and they behave differently from search rankings. A ranking is a position among many; a citation is a binary inclusion among few. Citations go to pages the tool could retrieve, read and trust: pages that state facts plainly, carry structured data confirming them, and answer the specific question asked. The research on generative engines found that pages with specific numbers, clear statements and credible references were cited far more often than pages relying on keywords. That's why a precise product page from a small store can be cited ahead of a marketplace listing — and why your competitor's citation count next to yours is a gap you can study line by line.
