eCommerce Optimization Insights

In August, Shopify's president told analysts that three-quarters of the orders its merchants got from AI assistants came from outside its top 100 product categories. That is not a statistic about big brands. It is about specific products answering specific questions — the only kind an AI shopper asks. Here is what sits behind the number, what it does not say, and a five-minute check to see whether your products are the kind AI finds.

Your rank tracker can't answer the question that matters most now. Five practitioner checks, no tools required — and what to fix if the answer is no.

On 15 September a set of defaults changed that decides whether AI assistants may read your store at all. The headline version of that change probably does not apply to you. Something quieter almost certainly does — if you ever switched on one particular convenience feature, your site now tells eight named AI crawlers to stay out entirely, and you never wrote that instruction. Here is what changed, and the ten-minute check that settles it.

AI agents read the Page Title, Meta Description, Brand field and product feed — the parts of your store nobody checks. Here is what one 7,605-product catalog audit turned up, and how to run the same check on your own this week with nothing but a spreadsheet.

Every vendor shows the before-and-after. Here is the after-that: 639 top-ten rankings decaying to 481, and the weekly discipline that turned it around.

Thirty years of search history say AI didn't change the job. Six wrappers, one constant — and what that means for the acronym soup.

You've gotten the call, or the email, or the LinkedIn message. "We can get you on the first page of Google for $500 a month." Lately it's "we can get you mentioned by AI." Same pitch, new noun. Here's what twenty-five years in eCommerce SEO taught me about motion versus action: why the unglamorous work keeps winning, the number most operators never calculate, and why it can still quietly decay on you anyway.

There's a narrative spreading through the eCommerce world right now: AI search is taking over, traditional SEO is dying, and whatever you've been doing to rank on Google is about to become irrelevant. It's a compelling story. It's also wrong. Generative Engine Optimization doesn't replace SEO — it raises the bar for it. Here's what that means for your product catalog and where to focus right now.

AI shopping agents like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews don't just rank pages — they interpret your catalog, compare your products against competitors, and make recommendations on behalf of buyers. For SMB eCommerce operators, the barrier to capturing that traffic isn't budget or platform. It's catalog quality. Here's what that means and what to do about it.

Most SEO tools for eCommerce are built on the same premise: here's what's broken, now go fix it. For SMB operators already stretched across merchandising, marketing, customer service, and fulfillment, that's not a solution — it's more work. Here's why the DIY model is quietly stalling growth for operators who should be winning.

You probably got here searching for GEO. Here's the honest version: AI engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews synthesize answers instead of ranking links — but what earns a citation is the same work that always earned a ranking. What GEO actually means for eCommerce operators, and the five things worth doing about it.

eCommerce SEO rarely fails overnight — it erodes as complexity grows. What works for a small catalog breaks at scale, not because SEO stops working, but because manual, page-level work can't keep pace. Sustainable performance means shifting from one-off optimizations to a system that adapts and scales with the catalog.

Product descriptions have gone from secondary SEO text to one of the most influential assets in eCommerce. As AI-driven search prioritizes context, clarity, and originality, descriptions shape how products are interpreted, ranked, and recommended. Retailers relying on duplicate or manufacturer content lose visibility; those investing in original, context-rich copy gain a lasting advantage.
