GEO for eCommerce: how to optimize product content for AI search

Search used to be simple. Rank on page one, earn the click, convert the customer.
That model is changing. AI-driven search engines don't just return links — they generate answers. They summarize, compare, recommend, and contextualize. Instead of ten blue links, you get a synthesized response with a handful of citations, or none at all.
So a new acronym arrived: Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO. And right behind it came AEO, LLMO, AIEO, and a queue of vendors ready to sell you a discipline for each.
Here's what twenty-five years of doing this work suggests: GEO is a real shift in outcome, and mostly not a new job.
What GEO actually is
GEO is the practice of structuring content so AI systems can ingest it, understand it, and include it in a generated answer.
The distinction people draw is real enough: traditional SEO optimizes for systems that rank pages. GEO optimizes for systems that synthesize them. SEO earns the click. GEO gets you into the answer.
But look at what actually earns that inclusion, and the picture gets familiar fast. The research is remarkably consistent on this — studies of how AI engines assemble answers keep finding that whether your content gets retrieved and ranked in the first place matters far more than any AI-specific tweak to the content itself. Retrieval position, topical relevance, recency, structure, authority.
Those are search fundamentals. They were fundamentals in 2015 and they were fundamentals in 2005.
What changed is the penalty for skipping them. A thin product page used to rank badly. Now it doesn't get cited at all — and an AI answer has no page two.
Why this matters more for eCommerce than most
A blog can be thin in a few places and survive. A catalog can't.

If your product page is a short description with feature bullets copied from a manufacturer feed, it's unlikely to be included in an answer — because fifty other retailers have the identical text, and there's no reason to choose you.
If your category page is generic and structurally unclear, AI systems have little context to interpret it.
If your brand has no substance behind it anywhere on the web, there's no authority signal to draw on.
None of that is new. It's the same problem duplicate manufacturer copy always caused. The stakes just went up.
What actually works
Five things, in rough order of leverage. None of them are GEO tactics. They're just the work.
1. Write with semantic clarity. Describe what the product is, who it's for, what problem it solves, and how it compares. Write in complete, self-contained statements — an AI extracting an answer can't infer context from the rest of your page.
2. Structure content for extractability. Clear headings, short paragraphs, explicit specifications, real FAQs. Content that's easy for a machine to lift is content that's easy for a human to scan. The two goals have never been in conflict.
3. Give category pages actual context. Category pages establish topical authority. Most eCommerce category pages are a headline and a product grid. That's a wasted asset.
4. Deploy complete structured data. Product schema — price, availability, reviews, specifications — is how AI systems and shopping agents read your catalog without guessing. This is the single highest-leverage technical investment an eCommerce merchant can make right now, and it was best practice a decade ago.
5. Build authority you don't own. Reviews, niche directories, earned mentions, community presence. Your own site tells the machines what you sell. Everyone else tells them whether you're any good.
One discipline, not four
If that list looks like an SEO checklist, that's the point.
The industry has an incentive to fragment this — four acronyms means four budget lines and four vendors. For a merchant who is also the CFO and the head of shipping, that fragmentation produces exactly one outcome: paralysis.
The alternative is to treat it as one job. Whether a shopper asks Google or asks ChatGPT, the answer is assembled from your product pages. Roughly 80% of the work is shared. Do it once, properly, and it serves every surface.

The part that's genuinely hard
Knowing what to do isn't the problem. Most operators reading this already knew most of that list.
The problem is doing it across a few thousand products, and then keeping it current while the market moves. That's not a knowledge gap or a discipline gap. It's an arithmetic problem — and it's the reason so many good catalogs quietly decay.

Visibility no longer means appearing in a list of results. It means being part of the answer. In eCommerce, being part of the answer often means being part of the purchase decision.
The work that gets you there is the work that always got you there. There's just more of it now.
