AIEO (AI Engine Optimization)
AI Engine Optimization is the broadest of the new acronyms: an umbrella over every practice that makes a website readable, trustworthy and useful to AI systems, whether those systems are search engines' AI features, chat assistants, or agents that browse and buy on a person's behalf. GEO (being cited in generated answers) and AEO (being the direct answer to a question) sit inside it, along with the technical groundwork — open crawling, structured data, machine-readable product facts — that both depend on.
The proliferation of names reflects a young field, and store owners shouldn't feel they need to choose. The work converges: a product page that states what the item is, carries complete structured data, answers the buyer's questions, and is open to AI crawlers satisfies every acronym at once. What AIEO adds as a frame is the reminder that the reader of your page is increasingly software — and software is literal. It doesn't infer from a lifestyle photo, doesn't scroll past a tab, and doesn't give credit for a fact that isn't stated. Visibility Optimization is CataSEO's name for doing this work across a whole catalogue.
What it means for your store
The names multiply because the field is young: GEO focuses on generated answers, AEO on direct question-answering, AIEO on the whole set of AI systems that might read your site — including agents that shop on a person's behalf. In practice they converge on the same page-level work: plain statements, structured data, open crawling, answered questions.
For your store, don't pick one acronym. Make the product page machine-readable and human-honest, and you've done all three.
Why it matters
More of the decision is being made by software reading your pages before a human ever sees them. If the software can't read your products, the human never does.
How CataSEO helps
CataSEO calls this Visibility Optimization and applies it to every product, category and brand page.
What you can do yourself
Run one product URL through Google's Rich Results Test, then paste the page into ChatGPT and ask it to describe the product. If either one misses the price, availability, material or use, the page isn't readable to machines yet — fix the fields it missed.
