AI Mode
AI Mode is Google's conversational search: a full AI-generated response to a query, with follow-up questions and refinements, presented instead of a results page rather than above it. Where AI Overviews add a summary to traditional search, AI Mode replaces the traditional experience with something closer to ChatGPT — the shopper asks, gets an answer, and asks again, and may never see a ranked list at all.
For shopping queries, AI Mode draws on Google's Shopping Graph — the live product data Google collects from merchant feeds and structured data on product pages — to show specific products with prices, availability and reviews inside the answer. That makes complete product structured data and an accurate Google Merchant Center feed the price of admission: a product Google can't confirm the price and stock of doesn't appear. AI Mode removes the last comfortable middle ground of search, where a store could be on page 1 without being chosen; in AI Mode a store is in the answer or it isn't.
What it means for your store
AI Mode is Google behaving like ChatGPT: the shopper asks, the answer is generated, and they refine by asking again. The sources are still pages from Google's index, but the shopper may never see a list of results at all. Product questions in AI Mode often pull live product data — price, availability, reviews — which is exactly the structured data most independent stores are missing.
Why it matters
It removes the last place a store could be "on page 1 but not chosen." In AI Mode you are either in the answer or you're not.
