AI Overviews
AI Overviews are the AI-generated summaries Google places at the top of search results for many queries, above the traditional list of links. Google generates the summary from pages in its index and shows links to the sources it drew on. Launched broadly in 2024 and expanding since, they now appear for a large share of informational searches and a growing share of shopping ones — particularly questions of the "what should I buy" and "where can I get" kind that independent stores depend on.
The effect on traffic is direct: when an Overview answers the question, fewer people click the results below it, and the sites cited inside the Overview capture most of the clicks that remain. Google states that cited pages are drawn from its normal ranking, so ranking still matters, but readability decides who gets summarized. A product or category page that answers the question plainly, with structured data confirming its facts, can be cited even when it isn't the top organic result. For a store, the practical response is to be in the Overview rather than to mourn the clicks it takes.
What it means for your store
When an AI Overview appears for a buying question, the stores cited inside it get the first click — and the ten blue links below it get fewer clicks than they used to. Google says the pages it cites are chosen from its normal index, so ranking still matters, but being readable enough to summarize matters more.
For your store: a product or category page that answers the question plainly, with structured data, can be cited in the Overview even if it isn't the #1 organic result.
Why it matters
This is the main reason search traffic can fall while rankings hold steady: the Overview takes the click. Being cited in it is how you get the click back.
How CataSEO helps
CataSEO writes pages in the form AI Overviews summarize and cite — direct answers, specifics, verified product data.
What you can do yourself
Search your top buyer questions on Google and note which ones trigger an AI Overview and who is cited. Open the cited pages: what do they state in the first paragraph that yours doesn't? Match it on the page that should own the question, add product or FAQ structured data, and re-check in a month.
