Answer Engine

An answer engine is any tool that responds to a question with a single composed answer rather than a ranked list of places to look. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google's AI Mode are all answer engines; so, in a narrower way, is a featured snippet. The defining behaviour is selection: the engine reads a small number of sources, decides which to trust, and writes one response that names or links them.

The shift from search engine to answer engine changes what a store is competing for. In a search engine you compete for position among ten results, and position 6 still earns something. In an answer engine you compete for inclusion among the two or three sources the engine chose, and there is no consolation prize for being fourth. The selection criteria differ too: answer engines favour pages they can read cleanly, verify against structured data, and quote without ambiguity, which is why a small store with a precise product page can be chosen over a marketplace with a bigger brand. Every AI-related metric in your report is a measurement of how answer engines treat you.
