GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)

Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of making content more likely to be used and cited by AI systems that generate answers rather than return links. The term comes from a 2023 research paper (Aggarwal et al., Princeton and others) that tested which changes to a web page increased its presence in generated answers. The findings were instructive: adding specific statistics, quotations from credible sources, and clear, authoritative statements raised a page's visibility in AI answers substantially, while conventional keyword stuffing did nothing or hurt.

For an online store the lesson translates directly. A generative engine asked "where can I buy a hand-carved Dala horse" reads a handful of pages and writes an answer naming the stores whose pages made that answer easy — the ones that state the product plainly, give real specifics (size, wood, origin, price), and carry structured data the engine can verify. GEO is one of the techniques inside Visibility Optimization; it's the part concerned with how an answer engine chooses its sources once it has retrieved candidate pages.

What it means for your store

A generative engine doesn't show ten links; it reads a handful of pages and writes one answer, naming its sources. GEO is the practice of being one of the pages it reads and one of the sources it names. The research behind the term found that clear statements, specific numbers, quotations and citations on a page raised its odds of being used in an answer far more than keyword tricks did.

For your store: an AI tool asked "where can I buy a Swedish straw ornament" will name the stores whose pages make that answer easy to write. Vague pages don't get chosen.

Why it matters

When the answer is generated, there is no page 2 and often no page 1 — just the two or three stores the tool chose. GEO is how you become one of them.

How CataSEO helps

CataSEO writes product pages in the form generative engines prefer — direct statements, specifics, structured data — as part of Visibility Optimization.

What you can do yourself

Rewrite the first paragraph of each key product page as a direct answer: what it is, who it's for, what it's made of, where it's made, how it ships. Use real numbers (dimensions, weight, count). Add product structured data. Then test: ask ChatGPT and Perplexity the buyer's question and see whether your page appears among the sources.
