Indexing

Indexing is the step after crawling: having read a page, the search engine decides whether to store it in its index — the vast library it consults when someone searches. Only indexed pages can rank, be shown in AI Overviews, or be retrieved by an AI tool's search step. A page can be crawled and not indexed; Search Console reports this as "Crawled — currently not indexed," and on independent stores it is the most common status after "indexed."

The usual cause is that the page gave Google no reason to keep it. A product page with a name, a price and a supplier's one-line blurb looks like ten thousand other pages; Google keeps one representative and drops the rest. Duplicates — the same product at several URLs without a canonical — are dropped the same way, and a stray noindex tag from a theme or app removes pages deliberately. Indexing is therefore where content quality first has consequences, and it's why Total Ranking Keywords can't grow until thin pages are given real content.
