Indexing

Indexing is the step after crawling: having read a page, the search engine decides whether to store it in its index — the vast library it consults when someone searches. Only indexed pages can rank, be shown in AI Overviews, or be retrieved by an AI tool's search step. A page can be crawled and not indexed; Search Console reports this as "Crawled — currently not indexed," and on independent stores it is the most common status after "indexed."

The usual cause is that the page gave Google no reason to keep it. A product page with a name, a price and a supplier's one-line blurb looks like ten thousand other pages; Google keeps one representative and drops the rest. Duplicates — the same product at several URLs without a canonical — are dropped the same way, and a stray noindex tag from a theme or app removes pages deliberately. Indexing is therefore where content quality first has consequences, and it's why Total Ranking Keywords can't grow until thin pages are given real content. Search Console's "Why pages aren't indexed" breakdown names the reason for every excluded page.

What it means for your store

"Crawled — currently not indexed" is the most common status on independent stores, and it usually means thin or duplicate content: a product page with a name, a price and nothing else looks like a thousand others, so Google keeps one and drops the rest. Indexing is where content quality first bites. Only indexed pages can rank, be shown in AI Overviews, or be retrieved by an AI tool's search step.

Why it matters

Your Total Ranking Keywords can't exceed what's indexed. A gap between products and indexed pages is your first fix.

How CataSEO helps

CataSEO gives thin product pages the unique content that gets them indexed, and its Total Ranking Keywords metric shows the result.

What you can do yourself

Search Console → Pages → "Why pages aren't indexed." For "crawled — currently not indexed," write real descriptions on those products. For "duplicate," fix canonicals or merge variants. For "noindex," check your theme and app settings. Request indexing on a few fixed pages and watch the count.
